The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl: Lane, a doctor, values order in every aspect of her life – her career, her house, her emotions, her relationships. Her live-in Brazilian maid, Matilde, finds cleaning makes her sad and yearns to be a stand-up comedian; while Lane’s sister, Virginia, finds solace in cleaning and secretly takes over Matilde’s duties. When Lane’s husband, Charles, falls in love with a terminally-ill patient, Ana, everything that was clean and tidy for Lane is thrown into disarray, and she must turn to the women in her life to help sort out the mess. Blending whimsical humor with wisdom and compassion, this romantic comedy about love, sex, death – and finding the perfect joke – proves that shared laughter can heal almost anything.
Character Breakdown / Project Needs
Casting for the following roles:
Mathilde – female character, 25-35, Latinx
Lane’s cleaning lady; a woman in her late 20s; she wears black; she is Brazilian (and regularly speaks Brazilian Portuguese, and occasionally Spanish in the play); she has a refined sense of deadpan.
Charles – male character, 50-60, all ethnicities
Lane’s husband; a man in his 50s; a compassionate surgeon; he is childlike underneath his white coat; in the first act, Charles plays Matilde’s father; athletic and comfortable with some states of undress. Should be able to move well, as script calls for some basic dance. Some limited singing is also required.
Ana – female character, 50+, Latinx
A woman who is older than Lane; she is Argentinean (and regularly speaks Spanish in the play, and a little Portuguese); she is impossibly charismatic; in the first act, she plays Matilde’s mother; she is also in a state of undress at moments in the play.
